Artists Statement

Fiona largely works with white earthenware and porcelain. Her work began as an exploration of clay as a material in a hope of understanding its boundaries better. At this time, large more sculptural pieces were made such as fireplaces and jardinière.

Further work has developed along two paths;

  1. Shoes: following the interrogation of a found child’s shoe a wealth of myths and folk laws emerged associated with shoes as well as a scientific angle which led to the gathering of DNA traces from the worn shoe.

Whilst initially believing the shoe to be a decorative object research revealed that a portrait can be built up from a worn shoe. Individual pieces were made out of pure white clays, the surfaces were left unglazed to create a ‘leather like’ finish, found objects were pressed into the surface. Pieces were also decorated with enamel transfers made from visual information gained from the shoe.

  1. Fish. These are evolving over time. Again made using pure white clays to give a better colour response. A unique dry glaze has been developed to enhance the surface texture and give a sense of movement to them by creating ‘shadowing’ that would occur as the fish swam under the surface of the water. Some pieces are naturalistic others more quirky and colourfull.
